STATUTORY ASSESSMENT
A number of London authorities have worked together to reduce inconsistencies in practice by developing joint criteria for statutory assessment.
The following authorities have formally adopted the document
Barking and Dagenham, Bexley, the Learning Trust (Hackney) Greenwich, Haringey,
Waltham Forest. Ealing and Kingston are planning to adopt them and Bromley
has based their criteria on the London joint criteria.

Following expressions of interest from a number of authorities in other regions, an inter-regional meeting was held in July 2005 to discuss extending ownership of the document.
It was agreed at the meeting to revise the current document to take account of "Every Child Matters" and the Change for Children programme. It was also agreed to amend the general guidance on a graduated response. The proposed revision is to make clear that authorities may consider requests for statutory assessment of pupils' needs where a pupil's level of attainment/performance do not exceed the levels indicated.
That work will take place in the autumn term with objective of having the
revised document available by December 2006.
